BMC 1.5 diesel starter motor information

Post by Ley154 » Fri May 31, 2019 6:35 pm

On my prototype 1.5 engined Mini, Tractor Research used a different starter to the one subsequently fitted to the 4/25 and 154. It is an M45G and has the solenoid immediately below the second flange bolt as shown on the photo of the one fitted to the sister prototype and in the attached advert for the 1.5 industrial version. It is not, as I thought, the one fitted to the J2 van as the solenoid is even further under the motor body on that model - I now have a new one spare!. Does anyone know the Lucas number of this starter or maybe even have one or just the alloy end mounting bracket part number 54240575. I'm in the UK near Gloucester by the way. Thanks John Poulter

Hi. I've already bought one of those but the mounting flange holes are on too big a pcd. Anyone need to buy a new starter for a series 2-3 diesel Land rover? John

is your starter no good . try swapping the nose (mounting end) onto the landrover one they are both M45G just different nose ends .

The starter currently fitted works fine but does not have the solenoid in the correct angular position as in the photo of the other prototype. If someone can supply the correct nose mounting to the number I quoted then my intention was to do exactly as you suggest and build up a starter with the correct configuration. Equally acceptable would have been finding a complete motor (wouldn't have to be working) with the correct solenoid position as I showed in both photos. However apart from your kind support silence is the order of the day. John Poulter.

Thanks for the link Mike but they are not the same starter. There are many variations that look like the M45G with various no of teeth on the pinion, different power capacities between whether the unit is for a gasoline or diesel engine, solenoid types and more and whilst I do have some of the old catalogues from the 1960's onwards the information is not complete. What's more irritating is that in the last 20 years I have actually had several of the exact model I need and fitted them to Leyland 154's because I didn't have the exact 154 type at the time - just my luck! John.
