Tractor Won’t Start

Post by Marvel »

Nuffield 10/60 ran like a champ last time it was used 6 months ago but now won’t start. It’ll start with easy start but won’t keep going. There’s fuel getting to the pump but doesn’t seem to be anything to the injectors. It hasn’t ever run out of fuel so shouldn’t need priming. Can’t see anything obvious but I’m no expert. Are there any quick checks for the injector pump?

After reading a few similar posts we’ve taken the cover plate of the side of the pump and turned it over. All the plungers are bobbing up and down but still no start.
If the injectors have lost their prime how long does it take re-prime them?

Panic over. Watched one of montegoson’s videos on YouTube which said to open the bleed screws on the pump and prime with the lift pump. Did that and it started first time. Probably obvious to Nuffield experts but pretty pleased with myself.

The bleed screws on the pump are rather important, and covered in all manuals. Sonds like there's a leak (I see possible evidence of one on the bottom of the filter in your pic), as you shouldn't need to bleed the system after 6 months of doing nothing.

The evidence around the filter bowl, lift pump, main filter was leakage from making sure the was fuel in the system. If there is a leak would it leak fuel out or air in?

If it was before the lift pump it would let air in, but after the lift pump it would let fuel out. It also depends on the fuel level in the tank when not running. Good to know that was just from bleeding.
