804 holset turbo HELP!

Post by Dixie normous »

The holset H1A turbo on my marshall 804 has got quite a bit of play on the shaft, been told the parts are no longer available to rebuild it, can anyone tell me if there is an alternative turbo that will fit? Thanks

I used Charnleys for a service exchange replacement unit for the turbo on my 802 which I assume would be suitable for an 804. It replaced the original factory fit but for the life of me I cant remember the manufacturer. I will try to check & get back

Thanks Dal, Charnleys have said they can no longer get the parts to recon the turbos, which is more than a bit annoying as part of the reason i bought the tractor was the fact they were (and still are!) offering the turbos on their website! I've been trying to find out if any other H1A model turbos will fit, they were also used on some masseys

I'm not 100% sure but didn't Marshall's fit Garret turbos to later engines? If so this could be a replacement.

Can anyone give details?

Have you tried Andrew at www.tractorspareparts.co.uk

I just Checked it was Holset - It had a warranty but I don't suppose that's worth the paper its written on. So now hopefully if I make sure it spools down every time & keep the oil changed it will see me out. The old one was probably 30 odd years old,,

The end float on the turbo can be up to 0.006" and the axial clearance up to 0.010". This seems a lot but the shaft has to float on oil. With speeds of up to 100,000 rpm or higher this is critical.

The important thing is to let the engine idle for a short time before stopping to allow the turbo to slow down.

Holset is now owned by John Deere, if this is any help.

Thanks for the replies chaps. Unfortunately the play in my turbo is well outside the tolerance, it's almost at the point of the impellor hitting the housing. The only H1A turbo i can locate is off a perkins engine, i'll have to take my turbo and see if it matches before i buy it

I finally managed to get hold of a good holset H1A turbo from a massey ferguson, the serial numbers are different but everything is the same size. I had a bit of a fight with it to loosen and rotate both end housings to get the inlet and exhaust stubs to line up for the marshall but i now have a turbo! If i ever come across any decent H1A turbos i may grab them (if they're cheap enough) as they seem to be getting as rare as hen's teeth! Thanks for the help everyone

This is a nice success story! Can you tell us which Massey uses the H1A turbo? I’d keep my eyes open for one too,
Thanks, Stu
